Favorite 50 Restaurants

Richmond's lust for comfort food seems strong as ever, but not its tolerance for high tabs. In the past year several restaurants have lowered their entrée prices or offered better deals on wines and small desserts. Many featured more locally grown products on their menus and became nonsmoking establishments. All of which makes it harder than ever for our critics to narrow their favorites to a list of 50, representing a spectrum of tastes and attitudes and honoring some places that might not get the attention they deserve.

If we've left off your favorites, let us know. And see our full listings in this issue, online at www.styleweekly.com or in "Taste," Style Weekly's guide to Richmond dining.

    THE BELVIDERE Restaurant:
DO NOT GO THERE!!! We made a reservation for 7. We arrived at 6:30, wasn't served our order untill 8:30!!! We were told by our server that we were to be comped a round of drinks, coffee and dessert. After we ordered our desserts and coffee, things got really BAD! Not only were told by the HORRIBLE and NASTY manager that we were NOT going o be comped, she said her kitchen could not handle 9 desserts...Ummm we only ordered 6 desserts out of 7 people...COUNT MUCH!!!??? Then, this nasty and terrible manager proceeded to to talk to the people sitting at the bar about how demanding and rude we were!!! This woman has NO business working with the public and absolutely NO business running a restaurant. So in short, we made a reservation for 7 people for 6:30, so they knew that a large party was coming, we arrived at 6:30, finally ate at 8:30 (and we ordered sandwiches!! how hard is making a sandwich!?) had our comps snatched away from us because this disgusting woman decided she didn't like us being upset about being ignored and forgotten and not to mention STARVING after waiting for 2 hours for 6 sandwiches and a plate of pasta!! We weren't even making a stink about it untill the end of the 2 hour wait for food!! I think we had every right to speak up about our problem. SHE HAS ISSUES. She has NO business in this business. AND STYLE magazine was there that night taking pictures of the place!!!! OMG!!! WHAT A NIGHTMARE!!! I will be quite upset if they get a good review from STYLE mag. Because it is the farthest thing from the truth! I will be posting this review everywhere and anywhere so EVERYONE will know about this terrible manager and how she thinks she can treat people.

Zuppa has moved, by the way - and if you could tell us how to actually get there, that would be great. They've hidden themselves somewhere in Rockett's Landing and apparently don't see the need for a sign.

ditto ben - some of these restaurants are closed many are dreadfulunclean, stupid service. There are about 10 good restaurants in Richmond. The rest serve swilllimp lettuce, dirty glasses, waitresses with their butt cracks showing, menus encrusted with filth. It's a joke.

Have you checked out CARIBBEAN MINGLES? It's located at 17 W. Main St., across from the Jefferson. I just discovered this place recently it's easy to miss unless you are walking by and happen to notice the name on the window. Apparently they have been there for 3 years, but they must not advertise much because as much as I enjoy dining out, I had not heard of Caribbean Mingles until an acquaintance introduced me to the owner. Uton, the owner, is also the chef, and brings his personal authentic island flair to Richmond in an understated yet delectable fashion. After enjoying lunch and dinner there, I am a true fan...and want to give credit where credit is due. Atmosphere is casual, pleasant and quiet - no blaring music or loud discussions. Meals are plentiful, reasonably priced, and most of all, YUMMY!

Your restaurant guide is horribly outdated. It is unhelpful.
